Brandon Sanderson is such a fantastic writer, storyteller, and world-builder. I have yeat to read anything by him that I haven't loved. In Alloy of Law, it was nice to revisit the fascinating allomancy and feruchemy magic systems. Although technically set in the same world, the 300+ year jump in time made the world feel more steampunk or, in other words, 1800s wild west met fantasy.
The main character, Waxilliam, was a lawkeeper out in the Roughs, but by birth was lord of a prominant family. The books starts with him returning to the city and trying to save the house from financial ruin by marrying a rich woman. However, he has a hard time giving up the lawkeeper life much to the dismay of his high society soon-to-be fiance. But as fate would have it, his fiance is kidnapped and an evil scheme is uncovered. Lawkeeper Waxilliam is back in action!
I won't spoil the adventure, but I enjoyed the book as much as I would expect to enjoy anything Sanderson writes. Sidekick Wayne is humorous and made me smile many a time. Tag-a-long Marasi proved to be a great addition to the crime-fighting team. And in Sanderson-style, the villain you thought was the villain turns out to be just a puppet in something much larger. The book's epilogue sets up for a sequel, and I can't wait!
P.S. I listened to this book driving to and from Huntsville, AL. Kramer's gruff voice matched the tone of the book well, and his ability to keep up with all of Wayne's accents was impressive.
