War takes its toll

This post isn't a review about a specific book, but a reflection on a series of yearbooks. I was researching glider pilot training in Greenville and went to grab the local university yearbooks. What caught my eye was how small the war-era yearbooks were compared to the rest of the shelf--a visual reminder that war takes its toll. When we hear numbers like 3% of the world's population was killed during World War II (that's over 60 million people), it's hard to wrap our mind around that number. When you see the numbers for a small university, it is so much more tangible. 100 young men graduated in 1941. Only 38 graduated in 1945.
