Book: The Hallowed OnesAuthor: Laura Bickle
Date Completed: 25 October 2016
One a special Halloween episode of the book recommendation podcast I listen to regularly, The Hallowed Ones was recommended to a reader looking for some mild horror reading for the season. The Hallowed Ones was pitched as a young adult Amish story...with vampires. What in the world!? While I am not a horror reader at all, I do enjoy me some Amish fiction. So I checked out the first book of this series from the library.
The book followed the usual trope for Amish stories--rumspringa-age girl falling in love, questioning God, and deciding between joining or leaving the Amish. And exactly as pitched, vampires were added for a suspenseful (and at times gory) page-turning experience. While the Amish elements were the norm, I was totally sucked into the action. I won't be reading the rest of the series, as I'm not fond of gore and horror, but I'd recommend it to someone wanting a mildly spooky story for October.
