Blog Revival 2019

I'm going to try reviving my blog this coming year as an experiment. At least for a few months to see what I think. For awhile now I've been wanting to unplug more from social media, but at the same time I don't want to be totally disconnected from my family and friends that live all over. I also want to have a bit more space to write out the stories behind some photographs, post thoughts and ideas in a space that won't explode with a bazillion notifications of people arguing, and not get sucked into the newsfeed wormhole every day. A dance friend modeled using her blog as a way to provide summaries of their life and just drops a link on Facebook every few weeks. I found that an inspiring method to stay connected without wasting time on social media.

Also, a comment made on a podcast I listen to regularly got me thinking last month--why are we putting our best content on platforms that may not be around in the future? While I may not be a public figure creating content, maybe I should be preserving or at least better organizing my writings and photographs. Diaries and journals are some some of the favorite tools of historians and genealogists. I'm a librarian by occupation, so maybe I should do a better job of keeping my own digital record organized and not lost in the sea of Facebook? After all, I know the pain of trying to identify photographs and how many boxes of "unidentified" and "unknown" photographs we have lying around the archive at the library (too many..all hail the people who write on the back of their photographs!)

Beyond establishing personal boundaries around social media, my goal is to organize the photos I'd like to keep on my computer better, include some of them in context on this here blog, and do more of a weekly check-in on social media rather than multiple times a day. I want to live wisely and redeem the time that's been given to me. (Ephesians 5:15-16) If you want a more direct line of communication with me, I plan to use FB messenger and still love a good old-fashioned email.
