We had several chilly days this past week as the number of cute snuggling photos of Daisy on my phone can attest. Let's pause for a moment and adore her...awww
This week we started a new homesteading experiment of fermenting feed for the chickens. Our flock has grown considerably the past 2 months, and, in theory, it helps cut the feed bill. (side note: we already feed them our scraps, weeds, farm rejects, and let them have fun in our compost bin.) I've fed them spent grains from a friend's husband's home brew in the past and they LOVED it. So hopefully they love this new concoction just as much. Nathan went to Ingles to ask for their leftover icing buckets, so we're set to see if fermenting is the wonder the permaculturists say it is.
Speaking of chickens, our nearly 4-year-old hen Elsie continues to amaze us with her egg-laying abilities. She even surprised herself by laying one in the middle of the yard. She's laid 3 eggs this week already beyond the age "they" say hens lay productively. She's a keeper! Plus her sass is entertaining enough in itself to keep her around many a year.

While Nathan was at Ingles getting the aforementioned buckets, he ran into the florist there and she was unboxing gerber daisies! He surprised me when I got home from work late Wednesday night with this sunny yellow. Can't wait for it to be warm enough to plant it at the mailbox to enjoy all summer long!

In part of our farewell to gluten tour of foods, we made french toast with sister-in-law Anna's cinnamon swirl bread. So. Amazing. MmmMmm! We will both miss her wonderful baking until summertime!

Since I worked last weekend, I was off on Monday and decided to take advantage of a Craiglist ad for free bricks since we'd like to pave around our fire pit. Filled up my trunk, hopped in my car, was pulling out of the material lot...and a cop pulled in. I suppose someone reported me picking up the brick and they came to do a check! No police knocking on our door yet, so I'm assuming it was a legit ad on Craigslist... o.0
One of the sunrises' this week was gorgeous orange that tinting the morning light for about an hour. Due to our house facing Piney Mountain, we don't see much of sunrises usually. So it is a treat to catch one this beautiful!
