Practical Love

Beyond learning about each other this first year of marriage, we've also learned more about ourselves. (Ask Nathan about our recent game of Settlers of Catan ;-) ) One of the things I've learned about myself is how practical, cerebral, and fairly unsentimental I am when running on autopilot.

Yesterday Nathan brought home these beautiful roses and put them right in front of my place on the dining room table. I 100% did not notice them AT ALL. I was enthralled in telling Nathan all about a photographer I discovered in a book and how I loved the way she used lighting, blah, blah, blah. It was only when I was clearing a spot to set up my phone to show Nathan her portfolio that I finally noticed: "Oh there's flowers!"

You know what I do notice though? When he changes the toilet paper, sweeps the back path, organizes the garage, feeds the dog, turns on the air purifier, and so on. I get the warm and fuzzies from far less "romantic" things, but I still experience them as love. He was duly warned while we were dating that acts of service meant loads more to me than things and words, but learning how to receive and give love different ways has been an amusing adventure thus far!
