Slipped off to the Saluda region of North Carolina for a long weekend away. We decided to take Old Hwy 25 up to see more fall color and take a slight detour to the Poinsett Bridge. Upon arrival in Saluda we meandered through the depot museum, wandered the shops, ate an amazingly delicious lunch at the Purple Onion, and later had afternoon tea at Mewdlics.

Cute little town

More pretty trees

After tea, we ventured off to Pearson Falls just outside of town. The easy 1/4 mile hike followed a stream full of its own small falls and rapids. At the end of the trail was the beautiful 90-ft waterfall full after recent rains. The sun was just beginning to set behind the mountain which made photos tricky, but we enjoyed the view nonetheless.

We booked a tiny house for our lodgings and had a blast inspecting their design, experiencing how big a tiny house can feel, and dreaming of building our own. One major flaw in their design was the airtightness. You could feel the wind passing through the house that first breezy night. Good thing heat rises as we were snug in the sleeping loft.

Not photographed was our visit to the historic Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. The chapel was originally built on the Green River plantation in the 1890s for use by the former slaves. In 1955, the chapel was moved to a new location in Tryon. The pews, windows, and interior are all still original. The small (less that 15 people) congregation was so warm and welcoming to us young strangers. We enjoyed worshiping, singing, laughing, praying, and communing with our brothers and sisters of a different tradition. A reminder that we are all one body.

The afternoon was spend wandering two large antique shops before heading back to Saluda for a second round of afternoon tea. This time majorly cheating with a glutenous carrot cake that I paid for later. It tasted SO. GOOD. though. A restful evening and leisurely morning passing through Landrum followed before we headed back down to the piedmont to pick up one very happy Daisy dog.

Seriously amazing carrot cake
