September Catch-Up

Well, September came and went in a crazy flurry. We were gifted an opportunity to glean hundreds of pounds of produce and plant an urban garden in the middle of West Greenville. Huge undertaking in already full lives, not to mention the intense summer heat and losing daylight. The peppers, tomatoes, eggplants, carrots, and onions left behind by the previous tenant have been beautiful. I'm sure picking in the golden hour also helps their appeal. The 'seconds' (aka not pretty enough to sell) have been going into the freezer and our stomaches lunch and dinner.

The whole place was a tangled mess of neglected plants and 3 foot tall grass. Providentially a super enthusiastic and hard-working volunteer joined our evening work and it's exciting to see all the progress made. The majority of the grass is gone, and a few of the beds replanted. The farmer and I are excited for the cool weather in the forecast that will help establish new crops for the coming fall and winter.

Even though almost every free moment has been taken up by farming tasks lately, there have been a few other small things here and there to catch you all up on. My postcard display at the library was taken down for the next exhibitor. Staff Day at the library is coming up next week with a fantasy theme, so all the departments were asked to create a crest/coat of arms which was great fun.

Most of our ladies have been moody molting messes, and therefore not laying many eggs. Two of the young ones though are keeping us supplied for our daily needs.

Daisy is also ensuring that she gets the right about of snuggles each week. Considering last night's cuddlefest, I'm thinking we may have been behind on this week's quota...

Let's see other than my car going haywire (mentioned in previous post), our kitchen sink also decided to leak all inside the cabinets and out onto the floor..again...Thanks to my awesome daddy for fixing it for good. Hopefully...you never know with plumbing...

In addition to gleaning at the new urban farm plot, I've had my eye on a pecan tree in a vacant lot. I noticed the green hulls opening up and learned that it means they are ripe for the picking! I've brought home a few cups worth, but still a fun find.

One small event I was able to make was Repurposed Pumpkins' open house. SO MANY gorgeous pumpkins made from upcycled thrift store fabric. My small group leader back in my middle/high school days is so talented and creative. I got a cute little fuzzy one and my mother got a few to give away as gifts.

Lastly, I'll leave you with a few beautiful nature finds on my morning and afternoon walks and breaks.
